Catalysts are important substances responsible for many reactions to efficiently create chemicals that are used as raw materials for various products around us. The quality of catalyst greatly affects the price of downstream products.
Nippon Kayaku develops, manufactures, and sells catalysts for the production of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid (direct oxidation method), and has gained high reputation from worldwide customers.
We have also been developing catalysts for the next generation of clean energy. Utilizing the technologies we have cultivated over the years, we are taking on the challenge of developing new catalysts to contribute to the global environment.

Acrylic acid is used as a raw material for SAP(super absorbent polymer) applied in disposable diapers, acrylic paints and adhesives for automobiles, and polymer flocculants for water treatment.
Methacrylic acid is used in optical applications such as light guiding plate for flat panel displays, transparent resins for large aquariums, as well as automotive parts and artificial marbles.
The large aquariums use acrylic resins, which are excellent in transparency, weather resistance, and chemical resistance, and are resistant to staining.
The catalysts are used to produce methacrylic acid, which is a raw material for acrylic resins.
To achieve carbon neutrality, we are developing high-performance catalysts for fuel cell systems that utilize methanol as a hydrogen carrier. This catalyst is a key material for on-site hydrogen production systems, which generate high-purity hydrogen from liquid methanol via methanol steam reforming technology. Leveraging our expertise in catalyst production for acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, we have successfully developed a prototype of a long-life, high-efficiency methanol reforming catalyst for hydrogen production.
We are currently evaluating its mass production and aim for early commercialization.
