Functional Chemicals Business

Safeguarding comfortable lifestyles with well-tested harmless products

Semiconductors

LEDs: The next-generation energy efficient lighting technology

At the Functional Chemicals Group, our principal technologies are directed toward the development of environmentally friendly products.

Today, no electronic product can function without semiconductors. Nippon Kayaku's NC-3000 Epoxy Resin series is used to protect the core of these semiconductors in difficult conditions. NC-3000 contains no halogen, a source of dioxin, which means that even after its disposal, it poses no threat to the environment.

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are increasing in popularity as an energy efficient device able to provide very bright light. Our group has succeeded in developing Alicyclic Epoxy to meet demands for a highly transparent and durable resin for LED lighting applications. Expanding use of LED lights is supported by our firm's resin technology.

Solar cells are a widely recognized example of recyclable energy. We are utilizing our long experience in dye technology to develop Dye-sensitized Solar Cells. This should reduce the cost and increase the use of solar cells.

We are also developing a Green Procurement System that will eliminate polluting substances from our raw materials and our production processes. Such potential pollutants can thus be prevented from reaching the market.

Pharmaceuticals Business

High quality ethical drugs helping in the treatment of cancer

Right: GELPART

Nippon Kayaku Group has a long history of research and development, manufacture, and sale of many useful cancer treatment drugs. Recently, we have been working on providing different treatment options as evidenced by our drug IA CALL which enables local delivery of highly concentrated doses of anti-cancer drugs for liver cancer, and GELPART, a medical material that is used to treat cancer by blocking the blood vessel that leads to the cancer. Additionally, we are actively working on low cost generic drugs to answer the social needs of this section of the market while also working on meeting the needs for high quality products among the medical institutions and patients we serve by investing in a new plant with the latest production equipment.

We make every effort to provide timely and accurate information on our pharmaceutical products by having over 400 Medical Representatives (MR) stationed throughout Japan, and with MINK Web(新しいウィンドウ), our website specifically set-up for providing information to the medical community.

Safety Systems Business

Saving Lives in Traffic Accidents

According to statistics from the Japanese Police Agency, the worst year in Japan in terms of deaths from traffic accidents was 1970 with 16,765 deaths nationwide. This same figure in 2008 was 5,155. This is a startling 11,610, or 70% decrease in the number of deaths. On the other hand, the number of accidents increased during the same period from 718,080 to 765,510. This means the death per accident ratio dropped from 2.3% to 0.67%, becoming less than one-third of what it used to be.

There are three ways to reduce the number of deaths from traffic accidents.

  • 1. Preventive safety (Educate drivers)
  • 2. Collision safety (Minimize damage)
  • 3. Post-collision safety (Emergency medical services)

Automotive safety products from Nippon Kayaku Group include automotive airbag inflators and micro gas generators used in seatbelt pre-tensioners. These items protect lives through collision safety by activating instantaneously in the event of a collision to protect the passenger on board.

We are working on strengthening our product development and global production organizations so we will be ready for the recovery of the automotive market.

Agrochemicals Business

Supporting the safety and stable supply of food

In May 2005, the Positive List System for Agricultural Chemical Residues in Foods*1 was put in effect in Japan. As a result, it became increasingly important to address the problem of agrochemical spray drift (spread of chemical droplets to non-target crops) caused by using Japanese conventional spray nozzles widely used on multi-purpose farming vehicles.

One of the solution for this drift problem is using a newly invented Drift Reducing Nozzle that sprays fewer, but larger, spray droplets. However, the enlarged size of the spray droplets tend to make it more difficult for the droplets stick to the surface of certain crops such as cabbages, causing concern over the poor efficacy of applied agrochemicals. To address this challenge, Nippon Kayaku Group will introduce a new spreading agent*2 product, Widecoat, in May 2010. Widecoat is a spreading agent that can assure the agrochemical efficacy, even when sprayed using the Drift Reducing Nozzle. We are proud that this product will be able to provide food safety as well as promising productive farming.

  • *1The Positive List System for Agricultural Chemical Residues in Foods: A law that prohibits distribution of food items that contain more than a certain level of agrochemicals for which no specific standards have been set. Unless a maximum residue limits (MRLs) is set for a particular chemical, a standard value of 0.01 ppm or less is applied as the upper limit (the maximum amount that will not affect human health.)
  • *2Spreading agent: A medium that is used to make sprayed agrochemicals easily attach to the target crop.
