I would like to start this message by expressing on behalf of the Company my heartfelt sympathy to all those who are continuing to suffer as a result of the unprecedented damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, which struck on March 11, 2011. We look forward to the earliest possible reconstruction of the affected areas.
Nippon Kayaku marked its 95th year in business this year. Founded as a manufacturer of industrial explosives, the Company has since added dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, resins, and automobile safety systemsautomobile safety parts to its product lineup, in quick response to evolving needs. Five years from now, Nippon Kayaku will celebrate its centenary. To ensure that it is a glorious occasion, we have united in our efforts in three key areas of operation: environment and energy saving, healthcare, and safety systems, respectively led by the Functional Chemicals Group, the Pharmaceuticals Group, and the Safety Systems Group. These efforts are taking place under the Phase I and Phase II medium-term business plans that we have developed. However, we are operating in challenging conditions. In Japan, the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake are expected to linger, while the global economic outlook is increasingly uncertain given financial instability in Europe, slowing economic growth in China, turmoil in the Middle East, flooding in Thailand, and the appreciation of the yen. To overcome these challenges and continue to grow, Nippon Kayaku is moving forward with initiatives that combine its technologies and develop products to lead the world in areas where it has proven strength. We call this approach global "sukima" ideas. All members of the Nippon Kayaku Group, including Group companies, aspire to achieve continued growth by independently displaying their strengths to the utmost and responding rapidly to change, based on the Kayaku Spirit of "Providing society with the best products which met customers' needs by means of endless innovation and real cooperation based on our high-esteemed ethics."
Believing that fulfilling its corporate social responsibility is the most critical aspect of its business operation, Nippon Kayaku will continue to step up its CSR management activities. We will also strengthen our business continuity plan (BCP) and take steps to transform ourselves into a company that consumes less energy. At the same time, we will fulfill our corporate social responsibility with compliance, safe operation, and activities to protect the environment as our highest priorities.
